Molokaʻi Heritage is exploring a research partnership focused on ʻiliahi (native sandalwood). The partnership would support habitat assessment, host-plant research, and the very long-term possibility of ʻiliahi recovery — approached with caution given the slow growth and ecological sensitivity of the species.
A multi-generational commitment
ʻIliahi is culturally and ecologically significant, and its recovery is measured in decades, not seasons. Any work would be patient, science-guided, and culturally informed, with protection of any existing trees coming before the introduction of new ones.

No ʻiliahi planting is planned. The partnership is exploratory and research-focused. Updates will be shared as research progresses and as cultural and botanical advisors review the direction of the work.
