Planning is underway for a watershed assessment intended to better understand the condition of upland slopes associated with Molokaʻi Ranch. The assessment would focus on erosion, aquifer recharge, stream health, and the role native vegetation plays in holding the watershed together.
Why watersheds matter
What happens at the top of the ridge determines the quality and quantity of water that reaches communities below. Bare, eroding uplands shed water and sediment; forested uplands absorb and filter it. Understanding current conditions is a necessary first step before any restoration can be planned responsibly.
A research-first approach
No revegetation or construction is underway. The assessment is a research and planning step, and its findings would help identify priority areas for any future restoration work. Results will be shared publicly once completed and reviewed.
Community knowledge welcome
Kūpuna and long-time residents hold deep knowledge of these streams and slopes. The assessment is being designed to welcome that knowledge alongside technical survey work.
